Description

The Crab Nebula needs no introduction, it is the remains on a supernova explosion in 1054 AD, which was recorded by Chinese and Japanese and astronomers as a new star that was visible even during the daytime!

I used an LHOO processing, data from an L-eNhance duoband (Ha, OIII) filter. The actual channel mixing was R (Ha), G (OIII) + 0.1R (Ha), B (OIII), with a synthetic L from the RGB image.

Image B shows a gif comparison of my image with the APOD Hubble image from 2020. I was really happy with the detail I was able to capture and the good correspondence to the detail in the HST image, allowing for the fact that the Crab Nebula continues to expand, which changes some of the details as well as obviously making my Crab bigger than the HST Crab. The APOD did not specify the color assignments, or when the HST image was actually taken.

Looking at the comparison, I decided to go very light on the noise reduction in most of the nebula, not wanting to destroy any of the nice detail. I had planned to capture more images to reduce the noise in the outer edges, but it is too low from my location now for good images (FWHM increases dramatically below about 35 degrees altitude, not to mention many obstructions from my location), and of course, next year it will have changed somewhat. I may still do a new version next year, it is such a wonderful target!

Title: GIF comparing to HST APOD image

Description: This gif compares my image to the HST APOD image from 2020. Note the expansion of the Crab Nebula changes some details and makes my Crab larger.
